Students Resume Sit-in at Shailabala Women’s College Demanding University Status

Students of Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College resumed their sit-in protest inside the campus, demanding that the institution be granted university status after talks with the district administration failed.

Students of Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College in Cuttack resumed their sit-in protest late Tuesday night, reiterating their long-standing demand for university status for the institution.

The agitation intensified after a meeting between representatives of the district administration and the protesting students failed to produce any concrete outcome. According to sources, discussions were held earlier in the day, but no assurance or resolution was provided regarding their primary demand.

Following the inconclusive talks, students gathered inside the college campus at midnight, holding placards and launching a renewed round-the-clock dharna. The protest has been continuing within the campus premises, with students vowing to sustain the agitation until their demand is met.

The students have been pressing for university recognition for over a month. Despite sustained demonstrations and multiple rounds of discussions with officials, no formal announcement has been made by the authorities. They argue that granting university status would enhance academic opportunities, allow the introduction of new courses, strengthen research capabilities, and provide greater administrative autonomy.

Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College, one of the oldest and most reputed educational institutions in the state, remains at the centre of the ongoing demand. As of now, the indefinite sit-in continues, with no breakthrough reported.
