Singer Sonu Nigam has shared his perspective on lyricist Javed Akhtar’s remarks criticising the recreation of iconic songs in contemporary films, particularly Border 2. Akhtar had earlier declined to write for the film, describing the practice as a sign of creative bankruptcy.
Responding through an Instagram video, Nigam expressed deep respect for Akhtar while explaining whySandese Aate Hainremains integral to the Border franchise. Comparing the song to a soldier’s uniform, he said the film cannot be imagined without it, while also acknowledging the importance of creating fresh music.
Nigam emphasised that Border 2 balances nostalgia with originality, citing the newly introduced patriotic trackMitte Ke Beteas a tribute to Indian soldiers. Reflecting on his long association with the franchise since 1997, the singer called the sequel a heartfelt continuation of real stories rooted in India’s military history.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is based on the 1971 India-Pakistan war and features Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty and others in key roles. The film released theatrically on January 23, 2026.
