Senior Trinamool Congress leader and former Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy passed away following a cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata. He was 70 and had been battling multiple health issues, including dementia, for the past few years. His son Subhranshu Roy confirmed that he died in the early hours after his condition worsened.
Mukul Roy was one of the founding pillars of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and was considered a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Known as the “Chanakya of Bengal politics,” he played a crucial role in building the party and helping it come to power in 2011, ending decades of Left rule.
He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017 and contributed significantly to expanding its presence in West Bengal, including its strong performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, he returned to the Trinamool Congress in 2021.
Roy also served as Union Railway Minister in 2012 and held key organisational positions throughout his political career. His health declined sharply in recent years, and his political activities had reduced significantly. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in West Bengal politics, with leaders across parties paying tribute to his legacy.
