Kolkata Raj Bhavan Security Heightened After Threat to Governor

Security at Kolkata’s Raj Bhavan was significantly tightened late Thursday night after West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose received a threatening email indicating a possible blast and a direct threat to his life, an official statement said.

The Governor’s office emphasized that the threat was taken very seriously and immediately reported to the Union Home Ministry. The Bengal Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are coordinating closely to ensure the Governor’s safety. Governor Bose is already under Z-plus security cover.

Midnight Security Review and Ongoing InvestigationFollowing the email, senior security officials held a midnight review to assess the situation and reinforce protective measures. Investigations into the origin and authenticity of the threat are ongoing. Officials noted that similar threatening messages had been received previously, suggesting a continuing pattern.

Political Reactions Amid Rising TensionsBJP leader Amit Malviya sharply criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government, alleging a breakdown of law and order in the state and accusing the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, of prioritizing political interests over public safety.

The threat comes during a period of heightened political tension. Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Banerjee visited the political consultancy firm I-PAC while the Enforcement Directorate conducted raids linked to a coal smuggling case. Banerjee alleged that the ED seized party-related materials and accused the central agencies of being misused.

Amid the escalating BJP–TMC standoff, Chief Minister Banerjee is scheduled to lead a protest in Kolkata on January 9 against the ED raids, as West Bengal gears up for elections in the first half of the year.
