A Revenue Inspector was allegedly attacked by members of a sand mafia while conducting a raid against illegal sand extraction in Balasore district on Friday.

The incident occurred under Baliapal tehsil when Srirampur Revenue Inspector Sarojini Tudu acted on specific information regarding unlawful sand lifting at Palpada along the Subarnarekha river. She reportedly reached the site to curb the illegal activity when she was allegedly assaulted during the enforcement drive.

Officials stated that illegal sand extraction has been a recurring issue in the region, with sand mafia groups frequently lifting and transporting sand unlawfully from nearby riverbeds. Authorities have intensified raids in recent days to curb such activities. However, it has been reported that individuals involved often flee upon spotting enforcement teams and, in some cases, resort to attacking officials leading the operations.

Following the incident, Baliapal Tehsildar Jyotsnarani Nayak visited the site and lodged a written complaint at Baliapal police station, seeking strict action against those responsible. Based on the complaint, police initiated an investigation into the matter.

At the time of reporting, no arrests had been made, though a few individuals were detained for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.

Meanwhile, local villagers informed officials about the extent of illegal sand operations in the area. They alleged that a portion of an irrigation dam had been cut open to facilitate access for sand extraction. Residents expressed concern that such damage could pose serious risks during the monsoon season and flood conditions, particularly since the government spends significant funds annually ondam repairs and maintenance.
