The long-standing dispute over the 69,000 assistant teacher recruitment in Uttar Pradesh has resurfaced as candidates from reserved categories announced a major protest in Lucknow on February 2. Frustrated by years of delays and what they describe as a lack of government initiative, the aspirants have warned of intensifying their agitation, including a possible gherao of the state Assembly.
The issue revolves around the implementation of reservation norms in the recruitment process and has remained unresolved despite multiple legal proceedings. Although the matter reached the Supreme Court in September 2024, candidates allege that repeated adjournments have prolonged their struggle. With the next Supreme Court hearing scheduled for February 4, protesters say they are no longer willing to wait silently.
Led by activist Dhananjay Gupta, the movement has mobilised candidates and their families from across districts, highlighting claims that several official reports and court rulings—including those by the National Backward Classes Commission and the Lucknow High Court—have favoured them but remain unimplemented. The renewed agitation has once again pushed the recruitment controversy into the political spotlight of Uttar Pradesh.
