Travis Scott Opens Up on Astroworld Tragedy, Says Healing Houston Must Be Done With Care

Rapper Travis Scott has spoken about the lasting impact of the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy, saying he wants to help Houston heal while respecting the feelings of victims’ families and the wider community.

Rapper Travis Scott has reflected on the Astroworld Festival tragedy of 2021, reiterating his desire to support healing efforts in Houston while acknowledging the deep pain still felt by those affected. In a cover interview withRolling Stonepublished on January 21, Scott said he hopes to contribute positively to the city but does not want to force acceptance or public gestures that may not be welcome.

The Astroworld Festival, held in Scott’s hometown of Houston in November 2021, turned tragic when a crowd surge led to the deaths of ten people and injuries to thousands. Scott described the incident as a moment that was meant to celebrate culture and community but instead became a devastating chapter in the city’s history.

Addressing public perception, Scott said the tragedy has created a distorted view of who he is and what he stands for. He added that the emotional toll remains heavy, noting that the loss of fans continues to affect him personally and creatively.

In previous interviews, including a 2023GQfeature, Scott said the tragedy weighed heavily on the creation of his albumUtopia, describing the period as emotionally overwhelming and saying it took months before he could return to making music.

Following the incident, multiple investigations were launched. In June 2023, a Texas grand jury declined to pursue criminal charges against Scott, concluding he was not responsible for the tragedy. Remaining wrongful death lawsuits were settled in May 2024, according to Houston Public Media.

Scott has maintained that his focus remains on honoring the victims, supporting their families, and demonstrating through actions—not words—his commitment to healing and responsibility.
