Rapido Riders & Auto Drivers Clash in Bhubaneswar Ends with Peace Agreement at RTO Office

Tensions between Rapido bike riders and auto drivers in Bhubaneswar led to complaints from both sides over livelihood and licensing issues. The matter escalated as gig workers approached the Commissionerate Police office seeking protection. After discussions facilitated by officials at the RTO office, both parties reached a compromise where auto drivers agreed not to harass Rapido riders.

A growing dispute between Rapido bike taxi riders and auto drivers in Bhubaneswar recently drew public attention as both sides expressed concerns over their livelihoods and operating rights. The conflict reportedly began after several Rapido riders alleged harassment by auto drivers, who questioned the legality of bike taxi services and claimed that riders were operating without proper commercial licenses. Auto drivers also argued that the increase in bike taxi services has significantly reduced their daily passenger numbers, affecting their income.

On the other hand, Rapido riders defended their services, stating that they are not involved in any illegal activity. They highlighted that they carry only one passenger at a time, follow safety norms such as helmet usage, and provide transportation in areas where auto rickshaws often do not reach, including narrow streets and interior localities. According to the riders, their service helps people reach destinations quickly and conveniently, especially in congested urban areas.

The issue later moved to the RTO office, where officials facilitated a discussion between representatives of both groups to restore order and avoid further confrontations.

After lengthy discussions, a compromise was reached. Auto drivers agreed to stop harassing Rapido riders, and both parties were advised to maintain peaceful coexistence while authorities continue to review concerns related to regulation and public transport operations. The outcome has been seen as a positive step toward resolving conflicts between traditional transport workers and emerging gig-based mobility services in the city.
