Pushpuni, also known as Pausha Purnima and one of the most significant festivals for farmers in western Odisha, is being observed on a sombre note in Bolangir district due to ongoing problems in paddy procurement.
Pushpuni marks the culmination of the agricultural cycle and symbolises prosperity after months of hard labour. Traditionally, farmers celebrate the occasion by bringing their harvested crops home during the month of Pausha and participating in community feasts and rituals.
However, this year, the festive mood has been overshadowed by uncertainty and frustration among farmers in Bolangir. Several cultivators alleged irregularities and mismanagement at paddy procurement centres, including the absence of clear procurement targets and confusion over token distribution.
Many farmers claimed they have been waiting at mandis for several days without being able to sell their produce, forcing them to return home with unsold paddy. The situation has caused significant distress during a time meant for celebration and thanksgiving.
Farmer representatives have urged the district administration to intervene urgently and streamline the procurement process so that cultivators can receive fair returns for their produce. As Pushpuni symbolises reward and renewal, farmers in Bolangir hope for swift corrective measures to restore both their livelihoods and the true spirit of the festival.
