Pahili Bhoga Ritual at Puri Srimandir to Conclude Ahead of Makar Sankranti

The Pahili Bhoga ritual at Puri Srimandir, which begins on Dhanu Sankranti, will conclude the day before Makar Sankranti. This ritual is an integral part of the daily worship of Lord Jagannath and is observed according to longstanding temple traditions.

Pahili Bhoga is offered following the Gopala Ballabha ritual and is completed before the early morning crow caws, marking the end of the day’s offering.

Religious SignificanceThe ritual commemorates Mother Yashoda feeding her beloved son, Lord Krishna, with various types of pitha. In line with tradition, Pahili Bhoga is presented to Lord Jagannath daily during this period, symbolizing maternal affection and devotion.

Variety of OfferingsA wide array of traditional pitha and other delicacies are prepared for Pahili Bhoga. Beyond the regular khechudi and dalma, offerings include chuda bhaja, gaintha, enduri, tikili, kantei, kakeri nali, bada, mugei, ambalu, kakera, chota and bada jhilli, laddoo, and several other items. A detailed list is prepared in advance and overseen by the Mahasuar to ensure all offerings follow traditional guidelines, with raw materials supplied from the temple godown.

Early Morning BeliefGoddess Bimala begins preparing the Pahili Bhoga around 3:30 am so that it can be offered to Lord Jagannath at the earliest. While Goddess Lakshmi prepares the later offerings, Pahili Bhoga is presented early, and devotees receive prasad shortly thereafter. The ritual may occasionally be delayed due to the Maha Snana ritual.
