The proceedings of the Odisha Legislative Assembly were disrupted on Saturday and adjourned within minutes due to loud protests by Opposition members over alleged irregularities in paddy procurement.
Members of the Biju Janata Dal and Indian National Congress entered the well of the House, raising slogans and displaying placards accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government of mismanaging paddy mandis and ignoring farmers’ grievances.
Speaker Surama Padhy appealed to protesting members to maintain order, but disruptions continued, forcing adjournment of the House twice during the day.
Deputy Leader of Opposition Prasanna Acharya and Congress leader Ramchandra Kadam criticised the government, alleging farmers were suffering due to procurement delays. However, BJP MLA Sanatan Bijuli rejected the allegations and accused the Opposition of intentionally disrupting proceedings.
The continued stalemate prevented normal legislative business and highlighted rising political tensions over farmers’ issues in the state.
