Odisha has carved a place for itself in the global record books with an extraordinary showcase of traditional craftsmanship, as its terracotta artisans secured twin world records at the “Bhabya Terracotta Kruti Prastuti” competition. The grand event was organised by the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts and held at Kalabhoomi.
The competition witnessed participation from hundreds of skilled artisans representing different districts of the state. In a remarkable demonstration of speed, precision, and mastery over clay art, seven master craftsmen surpassed previous benchmarks and established new global records. Their achievements received official recognition from the World Book of Records.
Sebak Rana from Bargarh emerged as the standout performer by crafting an impressive 310 terracotta glasses within one hour, setting a new world record. Other artisans also delivered exceptional performances: Madhab Muduli of Nayagarh created 248 terracotta items, Than Sundar Rana of Bolangir produced 232, Ramesh Chandra Muduli of Balasore made 230, Bijay Behera of Angul crafted 227, Basanta Rana of Bolangir produced 219, and Makar Ketan Sahu of Kendrapara completed 218 terracotta utensils within the stipulated time. Each of them set new records in their respective categories.
In another significant milestone, more than 1,000 clay artists participated simultaneously in the event, establishing a separate world record for the highest number of participants in a single terracotta craft competition.
Officials described the achievement as a proud moment for Odisha’s rich handicraft tradition. They noted that such global recognition not only honours the talent and dedication of local artisans but also strengthens the state’s position on the international handicrafts map.
