India’s mining sector achieved a historic milestone in FY26 by operationalising 30 mineral blocks—the highest ever in a single financial year—with Odisha emerging as a key contributor.
Out of over 200 mineral blocks auctioned during the year, bringing 30 into production within the same cycle reflects a major shift from policy to execution. Odisha accounted for five operationalised blocks, mainly involving iron ore and manganese—critical inputs for steel and infrastructure sectors.
Other states also played significant roles, including Gujarat (8 blocks), Madhya Pradesh (5 blocks), and Goa (4 blocks), showcasing a coordinated national push to unlock mineral resources.
The rapid progress has been driven by reforms from the Ministry of Mines, including faster clearances, improved Centre–State coordination, and streamlined approval processes. These measures helped overcome long-standing delays between auctioning and operationalisation.
For Odisha, the expansion is expected to strengthen its dominance in India’s mineral economy, generate employment, and boost downstream industries such as steel and infrastructure.
At the national level, the development is likely to reduce import dependence, support infrastructure growth, and accelerate regional development in mining belts.
Aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the momentum in mining reforms positions Odisha as a central player in India’s industrial future.
