Odisha celebrated a landmark in space research and higher education on Monday with the successful launch of its first university-developed satellite, CGUSAT-1. Developed by CV Raman Global University, Bhubaneswar, it is the state’s first indigenously built satellite from an academic institution.
The satellite lifted off at 10:17 am from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, aboard ISRO’s PSLV-C62 rocket. CGUSAT-1 was designed primarily as a communication platform to assist during emergencies and natural disasters.
A 31-member team of students and faculty at CV Raman Global University spent nearly five years on the project, reflecting the growing involvement of academic institutions in India’s space ecosystem. Many students credited hands-on training, internships, and faculty guidance as key to the project’s success.
The launch was part of ISRO’s multi-national mission, with 17 small satellites, including the Indian ‘Divya Drishti,’ lifted into orbit. International observers from countries such as the USA and Thailand attended the launch, highlighting ISRO’s reputation as a trusted and cost-effective launch service provider.
Students expressed pride and optimism, noting that their participation represents a shift in India’s space research landscape, allowing the next generation of engineers and scientists to play a direct role in satellite development.
