An alleged case of an Odia girl being taken to Bangladesh and tortured has come to light, with her family approaching police in Odisha’s Puri district seeking urgent intervention to bring her back safely.
According to the complaint filed by the family, the girl was allegedly lured by a youth identified as Sabir through an online application. The accused reportedly introduced himself as a Bengali and gradually developed a relationship with the girl before taking her from West Bengal to Bangladesh.
The girl’s family has alleged that she is currently being tortured there and is being pressured to convert to Islam.
The victim’s mother has lodged a complaint with Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Pratik Singh and appealed to the authorities to help rescue her daughter.
“My daughter has been repeatedly messaging me asking to bring her back. Police had searched earlier but there was no information. After two to three months, we came to know that she is in Bangladesh,” the mother said.
The family has urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to intervene and ensure the safe return of the girl.
Responding to the complaint, Puri SP Pratik Singh stated that the case dates back several years.
“When the girl was 16 years old, her mother had filed a missing report. In 2021, a kidnapping case was also registered. After searching for two to three months, the mother later informed us that her daughter had contacted her,” he said.
The SP further stated that police will begin fresh efforts to trace and rescue the girl.
“We will initiate a search operation in coordination with the Special Crime Branch and the Indian High Commission,” he added.
