Odisha’s Forest Department has stepped up its efforts against illegal hunting after a tragic incident in which an elephant reportedly died after consuming a bomb. Acting swiftly, officials launched a thorough investigation that led to the arrest of Dillip Nayak, the accused who was allegedly storing explosives and weapons in his possession, police confirmed on Saturday.

The operation was conducted in Durgapur village, which falls under the Angul Forest Division, Jharpada Range. A special team carried out a meticulous raid, uncovering a substantial cache of hunting tools and dangerous materials. The items seized included eight handmade bombs, two country-made guns, 62 rounds of ammunition, and two slingshots measuring seven inches and four inches. In addition, the team recovered three small nets, 50 grams of potash, one pouch, two twelve-barrel traps, 100 grams of gunpowder, and several other devices reportedly intended for hunting purposes.

Sources revealed that Dillip Nayak had previously admitted to hunting on at least one occasion, raising concerns about his continued illegal activities. The Forest Department emphasized that the probe is ongoing, with further action to be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

Officials said the seizure highlights the department’s continued commitment to curbing illegal hunting practices and preventing further harm to wildlife in Odisha. The tragic death of the elephant has underscored the urgent need for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws and vigilance against the use of explosives and other hazardous equipment in forests. The operation also sends a strong message that authorities are actively working to safeguard endangered species and maintain ecological balance in the state.
