Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced that industrial proposals amounting to nearly ₹20 lakh crore are currently under consideration in the state and, if implemented, could create employment opportunities for more than 15 lakh youth.
Highlighting Odisha’s emergence as a key industrial hub, the chief minister said large investments by leading corporate groups are expected to significantly accelerate economic growth and job creation. He attributed the state’s growing attractiveness to investors to its stable policy framework, strong infrastructure and availability of a skilled workforce.
The chief minister made these remarks while unveiling three major Hindalco Industries Ltd projects worth about ₹25,500 crore in the Lapanga area of Sambalpur district. Describing the day as historic for western Odisha, he said industrialisation would boost local incomes, improve infrastructure and open new employment avenues for youth.
Majhi laid the foundation stone for a ₹21,000-crore expansion of Hindalco’s aluminium smelter, which will add 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum of capacity. He also inaugurated a ₹4,500-crore flat rolled products and battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing unit with an annual capacity of 1.7 lakh tonnes.
Emphasising the importance of the battery foil unit, Majhi said it would strengthen India’s self-reliance in battery manufacturing and support the electric vehicle ecosystem. He urged Hindalco to prioritise the hiring of local, industry-ready youth and assured continued government support for future expansion and transparent CSR initiatives.
At the event, Hindalco Managing Director Satish Pai announced additional investments of ₹50,000 crore in Odisha, stating that upcoming greenfield and brownfield projects would create around 15,000 new jobs. The chief minister also announced that Sambalpur will soon get Odisha’s second World Skill Centre after Bhubaneswar to enhance youth employability.
