Renowned Odia jatra actor Piyush Tripathy returned to the stage on Thursday night amid an ongoing contractual dispute involving multiple jatra troupes. The actor clarified that he has not received any official court notice preventing him from performing and maintained that he would decide his next steps only after formal legal communication.

Tripathy appeared on stage at the Singha Bahini Jatra performance in Tangi, sparking renewed debate within Odisha’s jatra fraternity over the enforcement of restrictions linked to the dispute.

Actor cites lack of official communication

Speaking to reporters, Tripathy reiterated his faith in the judicial process and said he was unaware of any legal order barring him from stage performances.

“I have not received any court notice yet. Once I do, I will act accordingly. I have full faith in the judiciary,” the actor said.

Background of the contract dispute

According to sources, Tripathy had earlier signed a contract with Surjya Mandir Jatra, which is valid until June 2026. However, before the expiry of that agreement, he reportedly entered into a separate contract with Singha Bahini Jatra for the 2025–26 season.

The overlapping agreements led to a dispute, after which the Jatra Owners’ Association imposed a one-year break on the actor from performing on stage.

Legal move and association action

Despite the association’s directive, Tripathy performed on January 5, prompting the Surjya Mandir Jatra owner to approach the court. The matter is currently sub judice, even as the ongoing jatra season continues across Odisha.

Multiple troupes performing in Tangi

Sources claim that several jatra troupes — including Singha Bahini, Ranga Mahal, Tulasi and Shibani — are presently staging performances in Tangi featuring the actor. This has raised questions within the community regarding adherence to court proceedings and enforcement of the association’s decision.
