Nisha Maharana seeks anticipatory bail as police prepare to arrest Jatra dancer

Jatra dancer Nisha Maharana faces the threat of arrest for allegedly performing an obscene dance at a Jatra event in the Chandanbhati area of Bolangir district.

Jatra dancer Nisha Maharana is facing the threat of arrest after allegedly performing an obscene dance during a Jatra event in the Chandanbhati area of Bolangir district. The social media popular performer has now approached the Orissa High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the case.

The incident reportedly occurred on January 12, when Nisha allegedly made objectionable gestures and performed an indecent dance, sparking public outrage. Following a complaint lodged by ASI Ranjit Pradhan of Chandanbhati outpost at Sadar police station, police registered a case under relevant sections and arrested two event organisers for permitting the controversial performance. A special women’s police team from Bolangir has been stationed in Bhubaneswar over the past two days to locate and apprehend Nisha Maharana.

The case has reignited debate over obscenity in public cultural programmes and the responsibility of organisers to ensure decency during performances. Nisha’s legal counsel contended that she is being unfairly targeted and requested protection from arrest until the investigation concludes. Police have stated that further action will follow based on court directions and the investigation’s outcome.
