Nepal is holding a high-stakes general election as more than 18.9 million voters head to the polls to elect members of the 275-seat House of Representatives. The election comes months after a major political upheaval that saw the government led by KP Sharma Oli collapse following violent nationwide protests driven largely by Gen Z activists.
Polling began at 7 am and will continue until 5 pm across 10,967 voting booths and 23,112 polling centres. Authorities have deployed more than 300,000 security personnel to ensure peaceful voting, while helicopters are being used to transport ballot boxes from remote Himalayan regions. The India-Nepal border has also been temporarily sealed to maintain security during the election.
The political crisis began in September 2025, when thousands of young demonstrators took to the streets in Kathmandu and other cities, protesting corruption, nepotism and the dominance of ageing political leaders. The unrest resulted in over 75 deaths and forced KP Sharma Oli to resign.
Following the crisis, Ramchandra Paudel dissolved the parliament and appointed Sushila Karki as caretaker prime minister, paving the way for snap elections.
The election has become a major generational contest. The three-year-old Rastriya Swatantra Party has gained significant momentum with rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah as its prime ministerial candidate. Shah, who previously served as mayor of Kathmandu, has drawn large crowds and strong support from younger voters.
In one of the most closely watched contests, Shah is challenging KP Sharma Oli in the Jhapa-5 constituency, a stronghold the veteran leader has won six times.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has nominated Gagan Thapa as its prime ministerial candidate, signalling efforts to promote younger leadership within one of Nepal’s oldest political parties.
With 65 political parties and thousands of candidates competing, the election is widely viewed as a turning point that could reshape Nepal’s political future and determine whether the country moves toward generational change or continues under the traditional political establishment.
