Neal Katyal, a prominent Indian-origin American lawyer and former Acting Solicitor General, played a decisive role in securing a landmark US Supreme Court ruling against Donald Trump’s tariff policy. Representing small businesses, Katyal successfully argued that only Congress has the constitutional authority to impose taxes, leading to the court striking down the controversial tariffs in a 6-3 verdict.
Born in Chicago to Indian immigrant parents, Katyal studied at Dartmouth College and Yale Law School and later served under President Barack Obama as Acting Solicitor General. He has argued more than 50 cases before the Supreme Court and is widely regarded as one of America’s leading constitutional experts.
Currently a partner at Milbank LLP and a law professor, Katyal has received numerous honours, including the Justice Department’s Edmund Randolph Award. This latest victory further strengthens his reputation as a formidable legal figure while delivering a major legal and political blow to Trump’s economic agenda.
