Narendra Modi Launches Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro on Shared Track in Historic First

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the full Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS corridor and Meerut Metro, both operating on the same rail track. Meerut became the first Indian city to have Metro and regional rapid rail sharing infrastructure, boosting urban and regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the complete 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor along with the Meerut Metro, marking a major milestone in India’s transport infrastructure. The launch took place in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, activating both regional and intra-city rail services simultaneously.

The Namo Bharat RRTS connects New Delhi to Meerut, reducing travel time to around 55–58 minutes with trains capable of reaching speeds up to 180 kmph. Meanwhile, the Meerut Metro serves local commuters across 13 stations within the city, with trains running at speeds up to 120 kmph.

Both systems share the same tracks within Meerut but use different coaches and operational models. The RRTS focuses on high-speed intercity travel with fewer stops, while the Metro provides frequent urban connectivity.

Developed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation, the project is designed to reduce traffic congestion, promote public transport, and improve connectivity in the National Capital Region. This shared-track model is the first of its kind in India and is expected to serve as a model for future integrated rail networks.
