Mumbai Police Invoke MCOCA in Firing Incident Outside Rohit Shetty’s Home

Five individuals were detained after gunshots were fired outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Mumbai residence. Authorities have invoked MCOCA, treating the case as linked to organised crime.

The Mumbai Police have escalated the investigation into the February 1 firing outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence by invoking the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), indicating that the attack is being treated as part of a larger organised crime network. The incident occurred around 12:43 am when unidentified assailants fired four rounds outside Shetty’s home, creating panic within the film industry.

Five individuals — Aditya Gayaki (19), Siddharth Yenpure (20), Samarth Pomaji (18), Swapnil Sakat (23), and Asaram Fasale — were detained, with some reportedly having serious criminal records. Investigators have also identified Shubham Lonkar, a known associate of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang, as a wanted accused, who allegedly claimed responsibility for planning the attack. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the incident has heightened concerns about the safety of high-profile figures in Mumbai.

The use of MCOCA underscores the gravity of the offence and the organised crime angle, linking the case to a history of attacks against Bollywood celebrities. The Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) has condemned the attack, urging Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ensure the safety of film industry professionals.
