A major fire erupted at Tarini Market near Kalinga Studio Square in the Bharatpur area of Bhubaneswar late on Wednesday night, causing extensive damage and panic among residents and shopkeepers in the locality.
According to initial reports, the blaze started between 12:00 am and 12:30 am and spread rapidly through the market area. More than 15 shops were gutted in the incident, leading to heavy property losses.
Fire services personnel rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the alert and began efforts to bring the flames under control. Although firefighters eventually managed to contain the blaze, several shops had already suffered severe damage.
One of the worst-affected establishments was a furniture shop that was completely destroyed. The shop owner stated that furniture worth around ₹3 lakh, which had been prepared for delivery, was reduced to ashes. The owner also reportedly suffered minor burn injuries while trying to retrieve cash from the burning shop.
Meanwhile, some local residents have raised suspicions about the cause of the fire. A resident alleged that the incident appeared suspicious and suggested it could be a pre-planned act. The claim comes amid reports that shopkeepers in the area had earlier received notices from the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation regarding the construction of a footpath nearby.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and officials said the exact cause of the fire will be determined after a detailed probe.
