Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada cannot “categorically rule out participation” in the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran, as the war entered its sixth day.
Speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, Carney said Canada would continue to stand by its allies but expressed concern over the legality of the strikes on Iran.
Earlier, Carney said he supported the military action “with some regret,” noting that the attacks appeared inconsistent with international law. He also clarified that Canada was neither informed in advance nor asked to participate in the strikes carried out by the US and Israel.
Canada, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), maintains strong defence cooperation with the United States. Through the alliance, Canadian forces can operate from American bases during joint missions.
Carney also raised concerns about the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict, saying global powers were increasingly acting without respecting international norms. Despite this, he acknowledged that Iran’s nuclear programme remained a major international concern.
Meanwhile, the war has continued to intensify. Iran launched fresh missile strikes targeting Israel, forcing millions of people into shelters. In Washington, the United States Senate voted against a motion that aimed to halt the air campaign, giving President Donald Trump broad authority to continue military operations.
Tensions have also spread across the region. A US submarine reportedly sank an Iranian warship near the coast of Sri Lanka, while NATO air defence systems intercepted a ballistic missile heading toward Turkey.
The conflict began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, claiming the operation was intended to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme. The attacks reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with several members of his family.
Since then, Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting US and Israeli-linked facilities across the Middle East. Several countries including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq, Israel and Iran have partially shut their airspace amid rising tensions.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has indicated it could be drawn into the crisis due to its defence agreement with Saudi Arabia. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reportedly warned Iran against launching attacks on Saudi territory.
With more than 1,000 people reportedly killed so far, fears are growing that the conflict could expand further and draw in additional countries across the region.
