Kristen Stewart wants to direct a Twilight remake with a bigger budget

Hollywood actor Kristen Stewart, best known for playing Bella Swan in the Twilight films, has expressed interest in returning to the franchise — this time as a director. Speaking at Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch and Creative Impact Awards in Palm Springs on January 4, Stewart said she would “love” to helm a remake if the opportunity ever arose.

Reflecting on the original films, Stewart praised the work of the directors involved, including Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz, noting that each brought a unique, experimental energy to the saga before it became a global phenomenon. She described that era as creatively raw, when no one involved fully realised how massive the franchise would become.

Stewart suggested that a remake with “a huge budget and a bunch of love and support” could allow for a different creative approach. She added that she would be excited to re-adapt the story if given the freedom and resources to do so, saying she would happily commit to directing such a project.

The comments come after Stewart’s directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, marking a new phase in her career. She spoke candidly about the challenges of large studio productions, explaining how difficult it can be to maintain a personal creative voice amid multiple stakeholders and expectations.

Released between 2008 and 2012, Twilight starred Stewart alongside Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, and became one of the most successful young-adult film franchises of all time. While no reboot has been officially announced, Stewart’s remarks have reignited discussions about the franchise’s future and how a modern, director-led reinterpretation could reshape its legacy.
