The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu until January 11, with a deep depression expected to cross Sri Lanka by the afternoon of January 10.
In response, the IMD has issued orange alerts for Thiruvarur, Karaikal, and Nagapattinum, and yellow alerts for Chennai, Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Madurai, and Thiruchirapalli.
The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving northwest at 8 kmph and is expected to weaken into a depression within six hours, the IMD reported.
The Regional Meteorological Department predicts isolated heavy rainfall in Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore on Saturday, along with cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and lightning.
Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until January 10 due to the adverse weather conditions.
