The Government of India has announced that it is closely examining the recent US Supreme Court judgement that declared former President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs illegal, along with the new tariff measures introduced by the US administration.
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry confirmed that it is studying both the court ruling and Trump’s subsequent executive order imposing a 10% tariff on imports from all countries. The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 verdict led by Chief Justice John Roberts, ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) while imposing earlier tariffs.
Despite the ruling, Trump signed a new executive order introducing a global 10% import tariff, which will come into effect on February 24. According to the White House, Indian exports are expected to face this 10% reciprocal tariff, potentially taking the total effective tariff on Indian goods to around 13.5%.
The Indian government said it is carefully evaluating the developments to understand their economic impact on trade, exports, and bilateral relations with the United States.
Officials emphasised that the situation is evolving, and appropriate steps will be taken to safeguard India’s trade interests.
