In a significant breakthrough in the ₹200 crore cannabis oil seizure case, Odisha Police have traced the alleged mastermind behind the smuggling network operating from Koraput district.
The development comes days after a large-scale cannabis oil manufacturing unit was unearthed on an island inside the Jalaput Reservoir. Police had dismantled a temporary factory functioning from the isolated island, seizing 1,800 litres of cannabis oil and one tonne of ganja, collectively estimated to be worth over ₹200 crore.
One trafficker was arrested at the spot, and authorities deployed drone surveillance to monitor the island, which lacks direct road access.
Providing details of the operation, Y. B. Khurania stated that police have now identified the alleged mastermind behind the cannabis oil network and are working to dismantle the entire supply chain.
He revealed that authorities had earlier launched an extensive drive to destroy illegal ganja cultivation across the state. Cannabis grown on nearly 30,000 acres was destroyed, and around two lakh kilograms of ganja were seized from various districts.
The DGP noted that while hashish oil was initially seized in Malkangiri, a similar operation was uncovered in Koraput. According to him, traffickers altered their modus operandi after realising that transporting raw ganja increased the risk of detection. They began refining and further distilling cannabis oil to reduce concentration levels and facilitate easier transport.
Police have apprehended the main accused linked to the Koraput raid and are investigating forward and backward linkages to trace suppliers, distributors and financial connections.
Officials stated that after repeated interceptions of bulk cannabis consignments, traffickers shifted to extracting cannabis oil and transporting it in liquid form. As one litre of cannabis oil commands significantly higher value than one kilogram of raw ganja, the syndicate allegedly adopted this strategy to maximise profits while minimising logistical risks.
A sustained anti-narcotics crackdown is underway across southern Odisha, with drone surveillance being used to identify illegal cultivation zones and additional manufacturing hubs. Police indicated that more arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
