In a major crackdown on wildlife trafficking, officials of the Khariar Forest Division in Odisha’s Nuapada district seized two leopard skins and sambar antlers during a series of raids conducted on Friday. Six persons, including a father and his son, have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to official sources, the Forest Department first conducted a raid at Sardhapur village under the Boden Forest Range based on specific intelligence inputs. During the operation, officials recovered one leopard skin and two sambar antlers from the possession of the accused, leading to the arrest of four individuals on the spot.
Following interrogation of the arrested persons, forest officials carried out another raid at a separate location within the division. During this operation, another leopard skin was seized from the Dharmabandha area, and two more persons—a man and his son—were taken into custody. The seizures indicate the possible involvement of an organised wildlife trafficking network operating in the region.
All six accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and will be produced before the court. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the animal parts and to identify potential links with interstate wildlife smuggling networks.
Khariar Divisional Forest Officer Azeez Khan confirmed the seizures and arrests, stating that sustained interrogation led to the recovery of the second leopard skin.
