The first lunar eclipse of the year is set to take place today, beginning at 3:20:17 pm and concluding at 6:47 pm. The total phase of the eclipse will last for 56 minutes and 6 seconds.
Astrologers have released an advisory outlining religious and household practices to be observed during the eclipse. Devotees have been advised to suspend worship, keep shrine rooms closed and refrain from cooking or consuming cooked food during the eclipse period. Doors and windows are recommended to remain shut, and no auspicious ceremonies should be conducted. Activities such as cutting, sewing, using sharp objects and consuming non-vegetarian food or intoxicants are also discouraged.
The ‘Ghat Kala’ period, considered significant in astrological belief, will begin nine hours prior to the eclipse at 6:20 am and continue until 6:46 pm. The ‘Handi Chhad’ period will commence at 6:04 am and last for over 13 hours. During this time, cooking and worship of deities are advised against.
According to astrological interpretations, viewing the eclipse is considered auspicious for individuals born under Aries, Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Libra, Sagittarius and Pisces, while it is regarded as inauspicious for Capricorn, Taurus, Cancer and Virgo. Astrologers have also advised avoiding long-distance travel and postponing marriages during the eclipse week.
