Federico Valverde produced the performance of his career as he scored a sensational hat-trick to lead Real Madrid to a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Uruguayan midfielder delivered a remarkable first-half display that stunned the English champions and put Real Madrid in firm control of the tie. Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute after rounding goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and calmly finishing into the net.

Just seven minutes later, he doubled Madrid’s lead with a powerful left-footed strike that flew past the goalkeeper. Valverde then completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion in the 42nd minute, lifting the ball over defender Marc Guehi before smashing a brilliant right-footed volley into the bottom corner.

Real Madrid nearly added a fourth goal before halftime when Vinicius Junior won a penalty after being fouled by Donnarumma. However, the Italian goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s spot kick.

The emphatic result gives Real Madrid a significant three-goal advantage heading into the second leg at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium next week, with the winner expected to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Valverde’s performance also placed him among an elite group of Real Madrid players. He became only the fourth player in the club’s history to score a Champions League hat-trick before halftime. Legendary players such as Ferenc Puskas and Hector Rial achieved the feat during the European Cup era, while Kylian Mbappe did so in the Champions League era.

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised Valverde after the match, describing him as the perfect modern footballer and a true representative of the club’s spirit.
