Explosive Trap Meant for Wild Boar Severely Injures Cow in Keonjhar Village

A cow was critically injured after an explosive device, allegedly planted to trap wild boar, detonated in Darikhala village under Ghasipura police limits in Keonjhar district, Odisha. Authorities have launched an investigation into suspected illegal hunting activities.

In a disturbing incident linked to suspected illegal hunting, a cow was critically injured after an explosive device detonated in Darikhala village under Ghasipura police limits in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Wednesday.

According to local sources, miscreants allegedly concealed an explosive device inside a food packet and placed it in a forested area near the Atei Reserve Forest to lure wild animals. The device was reportedly intended to target wild boars as part of unlawful hunting activities in the region.

However, instead of a wild animal, a cow strayed into the area and consumed the food packet. The explosive detonated while the animal was feeding, causing severe injuries to its mouth and face. The blast reportedly resulted in grievous wounds, including extensive damage to the jaw and facial region.

Hearing the explosion, villagers rushed to the spot and arranged immediate veterinary assistance. At the time of reporting, the cow’s condition was stated to be critical.

The incident has sparked anger among local residents, who alleged that illegal hunting activities have been rampant in and around the Atei Reserve Forest for a long time. They claimed that despite repeated complaints, effective action has not been taken to curb such practices.

Environmental activists condemned the act as both cruel and dangerous, warning that such explosive traps pose a serious threat not only to wildlife but also to domestic animals and even humans. They have demanded strict action against those responsible and called for enhanced patrolling and surveillance inforest areas.
