An elderly man was allegedly assaulted by a group of villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Odisha’s Ganjam district. Police have arrested 10 persons in connection with the incident.
The incident occurred in Belpunji village under the jurisdiction of Bellaguntha police station. The victim, identified as Sethi, a resident of Dhepa Sahi in Chadhiapalli, is a retired teacher. He sustained serious injuries during the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Berhampur.
According to reports, a few days before the incident, Sethi was allegedly seen performing rituals and chanting mantras late at night at the Thakurani temple in Belpunji village.
It is alleged that he was dressed in women’s attire, wearing a black saree along with bangles and a garland. His unusual appearance reportedly raised suspicion among some villagers, who began to suspect that he was practising witchcraft.
A local resident stated that some villagers returning from a feast noticed fruits and a lit lamp placed inside the temple around midnight. Upon spotting the man there, they reportedly confronted him and questioned why he was present at the temple at such a late hour. The villagers then allegedly brought him to the village.
Following the suspicion, a group of villagers allegedly attacked the elderly man, leaving him seriously injured.
Police later reached the spot, rescued the victim and shifted him to a hospital in Berhampur for medical treatment.
After conducting a preliminary investigation, police arrested 10 persons from Belpunji village for their alleged involvement in the assault. The accused were later produced before a court.
