New Delhi: Several states across North India are witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures, with Delhi recording its hottest early March day in the last 50 years. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital recorded a maximum temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday, significantly above the seasonal average.
Weather officials said this is the highest temperature recorded in the first week of March in five decades. The previous record was 34.8 degrees Celsius on March 5, 1999, recorded at Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station.
On Saturday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 35.7°C, which is 7.3 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 17.4°C, around 3.4 degrees above the seasonal average.
The unusual heat is not limited to Delhi. Several neighbouring states are also experiencing above-normal temperatures.
In Haryana, the average maximum temperature was about 6.2 degrees Celsius above normal, with Hisar recording the highest temperature at 36.3°C.
In Uttarakhand, temperatures have been steadily increasing in Dehradun and nearby regions. The minimum temperature in Dehradun rose sharply from 12°C to 17.8°C over the past few days, which is around 6 degrees above normal.
The city also recorded a maximum temperature of 31.5°C, nearly 5 degrees above normal.
Parts of Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed higher-than-usual temperatures, although a slight drop in daytime temperatures was observed compared to the previous day.
Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 30°C and a minimum of 19.1°C, both several degrees above the seasonal average.
Similarly, Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, recorded a maximum of 28°C and a minimum of 17.8°C.
In Himachal Pradesh, temperatures have also been rising steadily. The Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave conditions in districts such as Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Solan.
On Saturday, heatwave-like conditions were reported in Sundernagar, Bhuntar, Solan, and Dharamshala.
Una recorded the highest daytime temperature at 32.8°C, while Tabo remained the coldest location during the night with a minimum temperature of 1.8°C.
Weather officials said the current heat spell may ease in the coming days. The IMD has predicted a spell of wet weather between March 10 and March 12, caused by an approaching western disturbance, which could bring rainfall and cooler temperatures across parts of North India.
