In a major push to strengthen urban-led economic growth, the Odisha Government on Friday announced plans to develop four key cities — Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Paradip — into a unifiedCommon Economic Zoneby 2027.
The initiative is expected to significantly boost the state’s economy, with officials projecting that nearly 33 percent of Odisha’s total economic output will originate from these four urban centres once the plan is fully implemented.
Sharing details of the proposal, Chief Secretary Anu Garg said that the core strengths of each city would be integrated into a single economic framework. Paradip’s industrial ecosystem and strategic coastline, Puri’s spiritual tourism and beach economy, Bhubaneswar’s educational institutions and knowledge hubs, and Cuttack’s heritage industries and traditional handicrafts will collectively form the backbone of the proposed zone.
“We are planning to convert Bhubaneswar–Cuttack–Puri and Paradip into a common economic region, and we are confident that at least 33% of the state economy will come from this,” Garg said. She added that the vision includes holistic coastal development, not limited to isolated tourism projects, but covering the entire stretch in a phased manner.
