Praveen Chakravarty, Chairman of the All India Professionals’ Congress and a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, described actor-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay as an emerging “strong force” in Tamil Nadu politics, amid speculation about possible realignments ahead of the Assembly elections.
Responding to questions about his recent meeting with Vijay, Chakravarty said, “Yes, I met Vijay. That’s all I can say. What is wrong with two people meeting?” He noted that large crowds were attending Vijay’s speeches and viewing him “as a political leader, not an actor,” adding, “He is a force. No one can deny it,” while cautioning that whether this popularity translates into votes remains to be seen.
The comments come after Vijay’s TVK referred to the Congress as a “natural ally,” fueling speculation about a potential broader tie-up ahead of the polls.
Chakravarty also emphasized Congress’s ambition in Tamil Nadu, saying the party cadres want “a stake in the government, a stake in power, a stake in governance” in the state, which the Congress has struggled to strengthen over the past 60 years. He acknowledged that some MLAs and MPs may have “other compulsions,” but stressed that the party high command knows what is necessary to bolster the Congress.
On alliance decisions, Chakravarty clarified that only the high command will make the final call. While leaders may offer suggestions, he said, “final decision [is] by high command.”
His remarks follow reports of an off-the-record meeting with Vijay and a social media post comparing Tamil Nadu’s debt situation with Uttar Pradesh, sparking speculation that the Congress may be reconsidering its alliance with the ruling DMK in the state.
Tamil Nadu, with 234 Assembly seats, is expected to go to polls around April or May this year.
