Incidents of mobile phone theft were reported at the ongoing Sisir Saras Mela in Bhubaneswar on Saturday night, with over 20 complaints lodged at Kharvelnagar police station.
According to authorities, several visitors reported their phones were stolen from bags and purses amid the heavy crowds at the fair. FIRs have been registered, and police have launched an investigation. Two individuals have been detained on suspicion and are being questioned regarding their possible involvement.
Visitors Recount Theft Incidents
One visitor said her phone, kept securely in a zipped purse, was stolen when someone slipped a hand inside and disappeared into the crowd. She noted that nearly 25 similar complaints were reported within about an hour and a half, suggesting the presence of an organised gang.
Another complainant said both her phones were stolen soon after entering the fair despite taking precautions. When she sought help at the control room, she was informed that no public announcements could be made due to a minister’s programme and was advised to approach the police station. On her way, she noticed a crowd where a woman had caught a girl allegedly stealing cash and a phone, which was recovered from her purse.
Fair Extended Amid Security Concerns
The Sisir Saras Mela has been extended by two days, now concluding on January 20, even as visitors have raised concerns over the adequacy of security arrangements at the event.
