Bangladesh’s New Government Likely to Take Oath on Monday After BNP’s Landslide Victory

Bangladesh may see its new government sworn in on Monday or Tuesday following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s landslide victory in the general elections. Interim chief Muhammad Yunus has initiated preparations for the transfer of power

Bangladesh is poised for a political transition as the new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is expected to take oath early next week following a sweeping electoral victory.

The BNP-led alliance secured 212 out of the 299 seats where voting was held in the general elections on February 12, marking a decisive mandate. With the results now clear, attention has shifted to the timeline for the formation of the new government.

The interim administration headed by Muhammad Yunus has reportedly begun preparations for a swift transfer of power. According to Dhaka-based newspaper The Daily Star, the swearing-in ceremony could take place within a day or two.

Yunus has instructed the Cabinet Division and the law ministry to initiate the formal process of handing over authority to the newly elected leadership. While Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid did not confirm an exact date for the oath-taking ceremony, officials indicated that preparations are nearly complete for the new government to be sworn in on Monday or Tuesday.

Another leading Bangladeshi daily, Prothom Alo, reported that Members of Parliament may take oath on Monday or Tuesday, with the Prime Minister and cabinet members likely to be sworn in on the same day.

Yunus Congratulates Tarique Rahman

Muhammad Yunus extended congratulations to Tarique Rahman, who is set to become Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister following the BNP’s landslide victory.

In a message quoted by The Daily Star, Yunus said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to you for the overwhelming majority secured by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party under your leadership in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.”

He described the election outcome as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic transition and constitutional continuity. Yunus also recalled the political legacy of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, expressing hope that their ideals would guide the incoming leadership.

Bangladesh now awaits the formal swearing-in ceremony, which will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s political landscape.
