Balasore Man Dies After Sustaining Burns While Saving Daughter from Alleged Attack by Son-in-Law

Rajendra Samantaray of Narayanpur in Balasore district succumbed to severe burn injuries a week after allegedly trying to save his daughter from being set on fire by her husband. The accused has been arrested and investigation is underway.

In a tragic incident in Odisha’s Balasore district, a man who sustained severe burn injuries while allegedly trying to save his daughter from an attack by her husband has died after a week-long battle for life.

The deceased, Rajendra Samantaray, was a resident of Narayanpur village under Baliapal block in Balasore district. The incident reportedly took place on February 17 following a family dispute.

According to allegations, Rajendra’s son-in-law, identified as Karunakar Kabi of Malatri village in the Soro area, arrived at his in-laws’ house and attempted to set his wife on fire by pouring an inflammable substance on her. In a desperate attempt to protect their daughter, Rajendra, along with his wife and son, intervened and sustained serious burn injuries in the process.

Rajendra was initially admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment. However, as his condition worsened, he was being shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar when he reportedly succumbed to his injuries.

Sources said Rajendra had married his daughter to the accused seven years ago. Allegedly unable to bear harassment by her husband, the woman had been staying at her parental home for the past month. It is further alleged that on February 17, the accused reached the house, created a disturbance, and set the premises on fire, leading to fatal injuries to Rajendra and serious injuries to other family members.

Police have arrested the accused and launched a detailed investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and determine further legal action.
