A social media post by Anil Biswal, spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Odisha, has triggered political discussion online after he referred to a symbolic “marriage” between the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress.
The post came amid speculation regarding the possibility of the two parties fielding ajoint candidate in the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in India.
Biswal shared a graphic styled like a‘holy matrimony’ invitation card, symbolically portraying a marriage between the BJD and the Congress. The graphic was accompanied by remarks criticising what he described as a political understanding between the two parties.
In the post, Biswal wrote that the development reflects“an alliance of desperation where convenience defeats conviction.”
He further remarked that theBiju Janata Dal, a party originally formed to oppose the Indian National Congress, is now politically aligned with it, describing the shift as hypocritical and opportunistic.
Biswal also referred to the political trajectory of the BJD, noting that the party’s founder and leader Naveen Patnaik had initially risen to power on an anti-Congress platform.
He pointed out that Patnaik is now seen politically interacting with Bhakta Das, president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), who had earlier been among the most vocal critics of the BJD leader.
Describing the situation as anirony of politics, Biswal said the shift from political “untouchability” to cooperation indicates what he termed asconvenience-driven politics.
Notably, the Congress had previously used similar symbolism to portray an alleged political closeness between the BJP and the BJD in earlier political debates.
Biswal’s latest post has since sparkedwidespread discussion on political platforms and social media.
