Senior batter Ajinkya Rahane will miss Mumbai’s remaining two Ranji Trophy league matches this season, reports confirmed. Mumbai are set to play Hyderabad from January 22–25 and Delhi from January 29 to February 1 at the MCA-BKC ground, but Rahane has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be unavailable due to personal reasons.
Rahane communicated his decision ahead of team selection for the second phase of the league stage. Earlier, he had stepped down from Mumbai’s captaincy ahead of the 2025–26 season, allowing Shardul Thakur to take over leadership of the 42-time Ranji Trophy champions.
Under Rahane’s captaincy, Mumbai ended a seven-year Ranji Trophy drought by winning the 2023–24 season, reached the semi-finals last season, and also secured titles in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Irani Trophy, with Rahane finishing as the leading run-scorer in the T20 tournament.
Rahane is Mumbai’s second-highest run-scorer in first-class cricket, amassing 6,141 runs in 80 matches at an average of 57.18 between 2007 and 2025, behind only Wasim Jaffer. Over his domestic career, he has played 205 first-class, 192 List A, and 284 T20 matches, scoring 14,209, 6,853, and 7,242 runs respectively.
