Fresh developments have emerged in the investigation into the June 12, 2025, Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 260 lives. According to Italian daily Corriere della Sera, citing sources familiar with discussions between Indian and US authorities, investigators have concluded that the crash was not caused by a mechanical or technical defect but may have resulted from an intentional act.
The aircraft had taken off from Ahmedabad airport when it crashed seconds later, striking a medical students’ hostel. Of the 261 people on board, only one passenger survived, while several on the ground also lost their lives.
A preliminary report released in July 2025 by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) referenced a cockpit voice recording in which one pilot allegedly questioned the other about cutting off fuel supply. Black box data indicated that both engine fuel control switches had been manually moved to the cut-off position, ruling out mechanical malfunction.
The report suggests investigators believe one of the pilots may have deliberately switched off the engines, causing the aircraft to lose power. However, responsibility remains unclear. Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, the pilot-in-command, and First Officer Clive Kunder were among those killed. Allegations regarding the captain’s mental health have been strongly denied by his family, who have called for a fresh probe.
Authorities have cautioned that no final conclusion should be drawn until the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) releases its official report. The final findings are also expected to include recommendations regarding enhanced psychological screening and continuous mental health evaluation for pilots.
