A significant power disruption occurred at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur during a surgical procedure, causing momentary chaos inside the operation theatre. The blackout happened mid-operation, leaving the medical team in darkness until generator power kicked in. However, even after restoration, electricity reportedly did not reach the OT for several minutes due to a malfunctioning UPS system dedicated to the theatre.
Initial reports suggest that the UPS units, maintained by the hospital’s General Electrical Division (GED), have not undergone regular servicing, leading to the failure at a critical moment. The patient involved is from Padmapur in Rayagada district.
Hospital Superintendent Professor Durga Madhab Satapathy confirmed that a technical fault in the UPS caused the disruption and assured that repair and maintenance work is underway. He added that power was restored within just over a minute through generator backup and that efforts are being made to prevent any recurrence by seeking necessary departmental approvals for UPS repair.
