Fear has gripped several villages under the Tamra Range of the Bonai Forest Division in Odisha’s Sundargarh district following repeated night-time incursions by a herd of 12 elephants. Although the animals remain within dense forest areas during the daytime, they are entering nearby villages at night, leaving residents sleepless and anxious.
The elephant herd has been particularly active in Badgaon, Dumer Munda, Nunia Pali, and Kanta Pali villages. Despite the completion of the paddy harvest, the elephants are reportedly breaking into houses where harvested grain is stored. Villagers claim that the animals have damaged homes and carried away bags of paddy using their trunks.
At least six villages have been severely affected by the continuous movement and depredation caused by the herd, creating a constant sense of fear among locals. Many residents are staying awake at night to guard their homes and stored grain.
Forest Department officials said teams from two sections are continuously monitoring the movement of the elephants and making efforts to drive them back into safer forest zones. Authorities also assured that compensation will be provided to the affected villagers as per state government norms.
