A woman allegedly died by suicide after jumping into the Mahanadi River from a bridge in the Burla area of Sambalpur district on Wednesday, leaving the local community in shock.
According to sources, the woman jumped into the river despite attempts by bystanders to stop her. Police later recovered her body and shifted it to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), where she was declared dead.
The deceased was identified as a resident of Burla. Police said she was married but had been living separately at the time of the incident. Her parental home is located in the Khetrajpur area of Sambalpur.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman was speaking to someone on her mobile phone shortly before the incident. She was reportedly wearing a face mask at the time.
Authorities are examining multiple angles, including possible family-related discord that may have contributed to the incident. However, the exact cause and circumstances leading to her death have not yet been confirmed.
Police from Burla police station reached the spot soon after receiving information and initiated a detailed probe. Statements from local residents and potential witnesses are being recorded, and all possible leads are under examination.
