Web Journalist, Associate Arrested for Allegedly Impersonating Maoists in Rayagada

Rayagada Police arrested a web journalist and his associate for allegedly posing as Maoists and issuing threats to companies in the district by putting up fake banners and posters to spread panic.

Rayagada Police on Sunday night arrested two persons, including a web channel journalist, for allegedly impersonating Maoists and threatening companies operating in the district.

The accused have been identified as Anubrata Bara alias Ranju, a web journalist from Rayagada town, and Bali Majhi of Kanjangamandi village under Kashipur police station limits.

According to police, the duo allegedly used a false Maoist identity to intimidate and extort local companies. They reportedly put up banners and posters in the name of Maoists at three different locations in Rayagada district on the 13th of last month, creating panic among residents and business establishments.

Following the appearance of the banners, Rayagada Police launched a detailed investigation. During the probe, investigators gathered evidence linking the two accused to the act of displaying the Maoist posters.

Police officials also stated that Bali Majhi had previously been arrested and sent to jail in connection with a Maoist-related case.

Confirming the arrests, Additional Superintendent of Police Amulya Kumar Dhar said the duo was taken into custody for allegedly spreading fear and misusing the Maoist name. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive and any possible wider links.
