Violence erupted inside Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi in the early hours of Monday after protests by Left-affiliated student organisations escalated into clashes. The confrontation followed a week-long strike organised by Left student groups against remarks attributed to the university’s vice chancellor.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) alleged that protesters were attacked during a demonstration and claimed that stones were pelted, leaving several students injured. Left groups accused members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of disrupting what they described as a peaceful protest.
However, ABVP denied the allegations and instead accused Left-affiliated groups of carrying out violent attacks across campus. The organisation claimed that a biotechnology student was assaulted inside the School of Social Sciences and had to be hospitalised. ABVP leaders also alleged that masked groups moved across academic buildings, threatening and attacking students.
The incident triggered outrage on social media, with calls for strict action against those responsible. The Delhi Police is yet to issue an official statement, and authorities are expected to investigate complaints from both sides as tensions remain high on campus.
