Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Sent to CBFC Revising Committee Amid Legal Battle

Actor Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan has reportedly been referred to the CBFC’s revising committee amid an ongoing legal battle over its censor certificate. The development comes after the Madras High Court set aside an earlier order favouring the makers and called for a fresh hearing.

Actor Vijay’s much-anticipated filmJana Nayaganhas reportedly been sent to the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) revising committee, intensifying the uncertainty surrounding its release. A source close toIndia Todayrevealed that the development took place on Monday and could lead the producers to withdraw their petition from the Madras High Court once the censor certificate is issued. However, the production house, KVN Productions, is yet to officially confirm the report.

The update comes days after the Madras High Court, on January 27, set aside an earlier single-judge order that had directed the CBFC to issue a censor certificate to the film. The court remitted the matter for a fresh hearing, overturning the earlier ruling that had gone in favour of the producers. The bench also instructed that the censor board be given an opportunity to respond and asked KVN Productions to amend its writ petition accordingly.

The dispute arose after the CBFC delayed the certification process and subjected the film to further review, effectively stalling its planned release.Jana Nayaganwas originally scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, but the lack of a censor certificate forced the makers to approach the court seeking relief.

During earlier hearings, senior advocates Satish Parasaran and Pradeep Rai, along with advocate Vijayan Subramaniam, representing KVN Productions, argued that the board had initially informed the makers that the film would receive a U/A certificate. Despite this assurance and the makers carrying out all the suggested modifications, the certificate was not issued. Instead, the film was referred to the revising committee, a move the producers claimed was unjustified.

Parasaran further pointed out that the complaint relied upon by the CBFC sought the removal of scenes that had already been deleted as per the examining committee’s recommendations. He argued that revisiting those scenes amounted to a redundant and purposeless exercise, unnecessarily delaying the film’s certification.

Explaining its decision, the CBFC earlier told the court thatJana Nayaganwas sent to the revising committee after a member of the examining committee lodged a complaint stating that his objections had not been properly considered. According to the board, the complaint raised concerns that certain scenes could potentially hurt religious sentiments and inaccurately portray the armed forces.

Promoted as Vijay’s final film appearance before he fully dedicates himself to active politics,Jana Nayaganhas drawn significant public and political attention. With reports suggesting that the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, expected in April–May, could further impact the film’s release prospects, the makers are now awaiting clarity from the CBFC on the next steps.
