An Iranian naval warship, identified as IRIS Dena, was reportedly attacked by United States forces off the coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in a major maritime tragedy. According to available reports, at least 87 crew members have been confirmed dead, while several others remain missing. The ship had around 180 personnel on board at the time of the incident.

Approximately 30 crew members were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy, which has launched extensive search and rescue operations with the support of naval ships and aircraft. Authorities fear that the death toll could rise as the search continues in nearby waters.

Pete Hegseth, the United States Department of Defense chief, stated that American forces attacked and sank the vessel while it was sailing near Sri Lanka’s coastline. Reports suggest the ship was returning after participating in a naval exercise in India when it was targeted with a torpedo.

Officials say the incident could mark one of the most serious naval confrontations in recent times, with ongoing rescue operations attempting to locate missing sailors and determine the full scale of the tragedy.
